Vibrant Worship

At Covenant Tabernacle, we believe in worshipping God “with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” (Mark 12:30 – NKJV) As a part of our worship, we blow the Shofar as blown in ancient Jewish worship.

Sermon, How Christ’s Disciples Must Have Felt when Jesus Died & Rose Again. Pastor Chuck Longworth, Covenant Tabernacle

We believe that the word of God is true (2 Samuel 7:28) and that “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 NKJV) We encourage all believers to develop a Biblical Worldview that shapes our view on not only our personal life but also our family, friends, loved ones, church, and civil government.

Discipleship

We believe in following Christ’s Great Commission to “‘go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Amen.” (Matthew 28:19-20 NKJV) As such, we believe in discipling individuals, families, communities, cities, states, and nations in obedience to God’s word.

1/16/11, Sermon, Why We Must End Abortion NOW, I Am My Brother’s Keeper

WHY WE MUST END ABORTION NOW — I AM MY BROTHER’S KEEPER

Sermon, Why We Must End Abortion NOW, And Who is My Neighbor? Am I my brother’s keeper? What responsibilities do I have to my brother? Aside from the obvious responsibility to not harm my brother, I have the responsibility to Deal Faithfully in regard to Physical Intimacy, to Wait Until Marriage and Bring Up Children Only in Marriage, to Defend My Brother from physical danger.

OPENING PASSAGE Psalm 139.

As an image bearer of God, I realize that I am my brother’s keeper.

Genesis 1:27 – “God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”

Am I my brother’s keeper? Genesis 4:1-10.

1. I Have a Responsibility to Deal Faithfully in regard to Physical Intimacy.

1 Timothy 5:12 – “[Rebuke] elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.”

Job 31:1 – “I have made a covenant with my eyes; Why then should I look upon a young woman”?

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 – “Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.”

2. I Have a Responsibility to Wait Until Marriage and Bring Up Children Only in Marriage

Exodus 22:16-17 – “If a man entices a virgin who is not betrothed, and lies with her, he shall surely pay the bride-price for her to be his wife. If her father utterly refuses to give her to him, he shall pay money according to the bride-price of virgins.”

Malachi 2:15 – “But did He not make them one, Having a remnant of the Spirit? And why one? He seeks godly offspring. Therefore take heed to your spirit, And let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth.”

3. I have a Responsibility to Defend My Brother.

Deuteronomy 22:23-24 – “If a young woman who is a virgin is betrothed to a husband, and a man finds her in the city and lies with her, then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them to death with stones, the young woman because she did not cry out in the city, and the man because he humbled his neighbor’s wife; so you shall put away the evil from among you.”

Deuteronomy 21:6-9 – “And all the elders of that city nearest to the slain man shall wash their hands over the heifer whose neck was broken in the valley. Then they shall answer and say, ‘Our hands have not shed this blood, nor have our eyes seen it. Provide atonement, O LORD, for Your people Israel, whom You have redeemed, and do not lay innocent blood to the charge of Your people Israel.’ And atonement shall be provided on their behalf for the blood. So you shall put away the guilt of innocent blood from among you when you do what is right in the sight of the LORD.”

Proverbs 24:11-12 – “Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter. If you say, ‘But we knew nothing about this,’ Does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who guards your life know it? Will he not repay everyone according to what they have done?” (NIV)

1/2/11, Sermon, It’s Time for Your Examination, New Year’s Resolution

It’s Time for Your Examination

Opening Passage Psalm 139.

It’s Time for Your Physical Examination

1 Corinthians 6:19 – “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?”

The book is titled “EAT TO LIVE” and is authored by Dr.  Joel Fuhrman, a medical doctor.

FORWARD ‑‑ Mehmet C. Oz, M.D., Director, Cardiovascular  Institute, Columbia‑Presbyterian Medical Center, writes the  forward to the book. Following are quotes by Dr. Oz as  found in the Forward:

*Although the United States is the most powerful nation on  earth, the one area in which this country does not excel is  health. And the future is not bright.

*In 1970, Americans ate 6 billion fast food meals. By  2000, the figure was 110 billion.

*Poor nutrition can also result in less productivity at  work and school, hyperactivity among children and  adolescents, and mood swings, all of which heighten  feelings of stress, isolation, and insecurity. Even basic  quality‑of‑life concerns such as constipation are affected,  resulting in Americans spending $600 million annually on  laxatives.

*The U.S. Surgeon General has reported that 300,000 deaths  annually are caused by or related to obesity.

*The incidence of diabetes alone has risen by a third  since 1990, and treatment costs $100 billion a year.

It’s Time to Examine Your Priorities

1 Timothy 4:8 – “For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.”

Matthew 6:33 – “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

It’s Time for Your Spiritual Examination

2 Corinthians 13:5 – “Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? – unless indeed you are disqualified. But I trust that you will know that we are not disqualified.”

2 Peter 1:10-12 – “Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. For this reason I will not be negligent to remind you always of these things, though you know and are established in the present truth.”

Philippians 2:12-13 – “Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.”

Galatians 6:4 – “But let each one examine his own work, and then he will have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.”

Psalm 19:7-14.

Psalm 139:23-24 – “Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

Psalm 119:9, 104-106 – “How can a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed according to Your word… Through Your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. I have sworn and confirmed that I will keep Your righteous judgments.”

It’s Time to Develop a Biblical Worldview

George Barna – Revolution – “Only 9% of all adults have a Biblical Worldview.  This means that less than 1 in 10 Christians age 18 or older believes absolute truth exists, believes that such truth is contained in the Bible, and possesses a handful of core beliefs that reflect such truth.  Those beliefs include: a certainty that the Bible is accurate in its teaching; Jesus lived a sinless life on earth; Satan is real, not symbolic; all believers are responsible for sharing their faith their faith in Christ with others; the only means to salvation is through God’s grace; and God is the all knowing and all powerful creator of the universe who still rules it today.  The other 91% of born again adults posses a patchwork of theological views and rarely rely on those perspectives to inform their daily decisions.  Although the typical believer contends that the Bible is accurate in what it teaches, he or she spends less time reading the Bible in a year than watching television, listening to music, reading other books and publications, or conversing about personal hobbies and leisure interests.”

Romans 12:1‑2 — “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”  (NKJV)

Ephesians 5:26 — “that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word,” (NKJV)

12/19/10 Sermon, O Holy Night, What Christ has Wrought for Us, Christmas Carol, Jesus, God

O Holy Night – What Christ has Wrought for Us

Opening Passage Psalm 138.

O Holy Night was written in 1847 by Placide Cappeau as a Christmas Poem at the request of his parish priest in Paris France. The poem was later put to music by Adolphe Adam. The year the Christmas Carol was written is significant as we shall see when we look at verse three.

1. O holy night, the stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of the dear Savior’s birth;
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn;

Chorus
Fall on your knees, Oh hear the angel voices!
O night divine, O night when Christ was born!
O night, O holy night, O night divine.

Romans 3:10-18

Romans 5:6-8 – “For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Isaiah 9:2-3 – “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined. You have multiplied the nation and increased its joy; they rejoice before You according to the joy of harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.”

Ephesians 2:8-10 – “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

2. Led by the light of faith serenely beaming
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand
So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming
Here come the wise men from Orient land
The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger
In all our trials born to be our friend.

Chorus
He knows our need, He guardeth us from danger
Behold your King! Before Him lowly bend!
Behold your King! Before Him lowly bend!

Isaiah 49:7 — “…Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the LORD who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel; snd He has chosen You.”

Psalm 138:4 – “All the kings of the earth shall praise You, O LORD…”

1 Timothy 6:15 – “…He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords…”

Hebrews 2:17-18 – “Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.”

Psalm 95:6 – “Oh come, let us worship and bow down;Let us kneel before the LORD our Maker.”

3. Truly He taught us to love one another
His law is love and His gospel is peace
Chains shall He break, for the slave is our brother,
And in His name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
Let all within us praise His holy name.

Chorus
Christ is the Lord, O praise His name forever!
His pow’r and glory evermore proclaim!
His pow’r and glory evermore proclaim!

When the Christmas Carol was written slavery was universally practiced. The carol was banned in French Churches but was adopted by the abolitionists in the United States. Today we look back on slavery with disdain. One day we will look back on abortion as we now look back on slavery. No one today would say I wouldn’t personally own a slave but I wouldn’t stop someone else from owning one, yet pro abortion and pro-choice advocates and politicians make this very argument when they say I wouldn’t personally have an abortion but I wouldn’t stop anyone else from having one. When we talk about abortion, we’re talking about killing preborn baby girls and boys and wounding their mothers. We must pray and work until all human life is protected and oppression ceases!

Matthew 22:37-40 – “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

Romans 10:15 – “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things!”

Exodus 21 – In Biblical slavery, the slave voluntarily chose to be a slave, personally benefited monetarily from the slavery, and would serve no more than six years, unless he loved his master and voluntarily chose to serve his master for life.

Psalm 98:4 – “Shout joyfully to the LORD, all the earth; break forth in song, rejoice, and sing praises.”

Luke 2:11 – “For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”

Jude 24-25 – “To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy — to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.”

Has Government Exceeded its Biblical Authority

We have seen ever increasingly the ever expanding role of government in America. This expansion has greatly accelerated in the last two years as President Barack Obama has aggressively pushed his radical, socialist agenda.

We’ve been told, you can keep your own health plan. That much is true; however, it will cost you 40% more to do so. Why? Because I now have to pay for the extra coverage that I don’t need but the government mandates. Since insurance companies can’t charge the individuals needing the coverage extra, they have to charge everyone extra.

Recently the federal government in a lame duck session passed outrageous acts that expanded their control over our lives by passing the food safety act which gives the federal government the right to shut down small farms and even gardens and a bill that regulate bake sales at schools and includes a push to provide breakfast, lunch, and supper for school children. These acts and most of the other things the federal government does are unconstitutional. Look in the constitution and the Bible, and you won’t find the authority for 95% of what the federal government does.

But it’s not just the Federal Government that’s at fault. In Florida, someone who wants to paint someone’s fence has to go to four government offices in different locations and pay fees to get an occupational permit. You shouldn’t need the governments permission to work!

You can’t change your windows in your own house without the governments permission. You can’t change your doors in your own house without your governments permission. In some cities, you can’t hold a yard sale or change your hot water heater without a permit. Pretty soon, you’ll have to get the governments permission to change your toilette seat.

How did the founding fathers make it without permits? How did their houses stand up. How did they make it without welfare? How did they survive without Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security? How did they send their kids to college without government loans? How did they make it without government regulation?

In November, the American people said enough is enough. We’re taking our country back! As we move forward, let us look at what the Bible says about the size and scope of the government and taxes.

Has Government Exceeded its Biblical Authority Sermon Notes

Opening Passage Psalm 18.

What is the Biblical Role of Government

1 Samuel 8:11-20.

Romans 13:1-7 – “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. 4 For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil. 5 Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for conscience’ sake. 6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God’s ministers attending continually to this very thing. 7 Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.” (NKJV)

Who is Your Protector?

“Then I proclaimed a fast there at the river of Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek from Him the right way for us and our little ones and all our possessions. For I was ashamed to request of the king an escort of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy on the road, because we had spoken to the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all those for good who seek Him, but His power and His wrath are against all those who forsake Him.” Ezra 8:21-22.

In Whom Do You Trust?

Psalm 18:2, 30, 35 – “The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. 30 As for God, His way is perfect; The word of the LORD is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him. 35 You have also given me the shield of Your salvation; Your right hand has held me up, Your gentleness has made me great.”

Who is Your Provider?

Matthew 6:31-34 — “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”
