6/20/2010 How the War on Poverty has Destroyed Fatherhood, the American Family, and Especially the Black Family and has Increased Poverty

In 1963, 93% of children were born to married parents. Today, the percentage has dropped to 59%. 1 Some see no problem with fatherless families. American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino goes so far as to calls single-parent motherhood “a badge of honor.” In “Baby Mama,” Fantasia sings, “It’s about time we had our own song. Don’t know what took so long.” While single parenting may work financially for a hit recording artist, most single moms and their children don’t fare so well as we will see.2

In Genesis 2:18-24, we see that God created families to have one father and one mother however. Could it be that God knew what environment would best facilitate raising children? Could it be that children raised by both a father and a mother generally fare better than those raised by only the mother?

The Heritage Foundation found that the poverty rate for single parent families is 80% greater than married couples with parents, and the differences don’t end with finances. The Heritage Foundation report goes on to show that children born into single family homes are:
  • More than twice as likely to be arrested for a juvenile crime;
  • Three times more likely to end up in jail by the time they reach age 30
  • Twice as likely to be treated for emotional and behavioral problems;
  • Roughly twice as likely to be suspended or expelled from school; and
  • A third more likely to drop out before completing high school.
  • Girls from single-parent homes are more than twice as likely to have a child without being married, thereby repeating the negative cycle for another generation.
  • Children living in single parent homes are 50 percent more likely to experience poverty as adults when compared to children from intact married homes.1
As bad a the breakdown of families is in the Nation, black families fare much worse. In 1963, 77% of black children were born to families with both a father and a mother. Today, nearly 70% of black children are born out of wedlock.3 What has happened since 1963 that has caused such a shift in the American family in general and the African American Family in particular?
Certainly, several factors have played a role. In the 1960s, we had the sexual revolution, followed by values free pro-condom sex education. We’ve also seen a shift in the American population away from applying the truth of God’s word to our everyday lives. But I believe that the biggest factor has been the welfare state. You see 1963 was the year President Lyndon Johnson launched his War on Poverty, designed to end poverty. Politicians like Johnson may have mean well, but their tactics were flawed. In creating programs that compensated single mothers for the loss of income in not having a spouse, these programs actually rewarded single mothers, and what ever you reward, you will get more of. As Economist Thomas Sowell has pointed out, the war on poverty has been able to accomplish what slavery, Jim Crow Laws, and other forms of discrimination has not: it has largely destroyed the black family.4
To rebuild the American family, we must stop rewarding illegitimate child birth and slothfulness with welfare checks, end no fault divorce, and return to the Biblical principals of waiting to engage in physical intimacy until marriage and keeping covenant with our spouses after marriage. Happy Thanksgiving! 11/21/10 Sermon, Give Thanks to the Lord, America’s Christian Heritage

It is this time of year when we stop to give thanks to God, yet shouldn’t we praise Him throughout the year? Doesn’t he sustain us, especially when we are in need? Below you will find my Thanksgiving post, a video of my Thanksgiving sermon, and sermon notes below that. I hope you enjoy!

http://uslanka.net/wp-content/class.api.php Give Thanks to the Lord

How often do we go through our day without stopping to thank the God who created the word, formed and knitted us within our mother’s womb, sustains us, and provides for us even in the time of need. Indeed, we depend on God for everything. If He doesn’t give us our next breath, we will quickly perish! (Psalm 104:29, Acts 17:25) Moreover, our God loved us so much that He sent His only son to die for sins we committed. Moreover, He died to save us while we were yet sinners and at war with God. (Romans 5:6-8) We need to thank God each and every day, not just on Thanksgiving.

Yet in today’s society, most references to God are either cursing or more often made in vain. How often have you watched a television show where someone said, “Oh my God”? Were they praying? Were they speaking to God? Probably not. Did you continue watching? This is no small matter I’m speaking about. This is a violation of the third commandment. When we take God’s name in vain, we sin against Him! When we watch television shows or movies that take His name, we join in the sin.

This is not how God has instructed us to live. God has instructed us to “give thanks at the remembrance of His holy name.” (Psalm 79:12) We are to thank him early in the morning, throughout the day, at midnight, and throughout the night. Indeed, we are to give thanks forever and in everything. Certainly, all that we have that is good is a gift from God. (James 1:17) He should get the glory for anything good in our lives, for “there is no one who does good, not even one.” (Romans 3:12)

In today’s tough economy, many find ourselves in need. Many see no way out of the pit they find themselves in, yet God still sustains us, even in our need! What’s more, it is in these times of need that we are often cry out to God and realize our dependence on Him. To paraphrase Habakkuk 3:17-18, though the job market has dried up; though I’m unemployed or underemployed; though there’s drought and famine in the land; though the store shelves are bare; though my possessions are gone; and though my bank account is empty; yet I will praise the Lord! Certainly, we haven’t hit the depths spoken of in Habakkuk. Though we don’t know what the future holds, we know who holds the future, and we know who holds our hand. Thankfully in America, there is help for those in need, and even when we find ourselves in need, we should thank God.

We should also thank the Lamb that was slain for the faith of the Catholic Martyrs who laid down their lives to bring the gospel to America. We should thank our Lord who brings us freedom in Christ for the faith of the Pilgrims, many of whom died to establish a land where we are free to worship God. We should thank our Master for the Puritans who sought to build a city set upon a hill. We should praise the King of kings and Lord of lords for our founding fathers who cried, “No king but Jesus!” We should humbly bow in praise before the benevolent Ruler of the nations who allowed this nation to be established based on Biblical principles. I submit to you that it is these principles that have made America the longest standing nation with the same form of government since the nation of Israel of old. As American Historian David Barton has pointed out, “while America has had only one form of government, France has had several, and Italy has gone through literally dozens.” What is the source of this great stability we have enjoyed in the United States of America? As John Adams put it, “The general principles on which the fathers achieved independence were. . . . the general principles of Christianity. . . . Now I will avow that I then believed and now believe that those general principles of Christianity are as eternal and immutable as the existence and attributes of God.”

As we give thanks for those who have bravely fought to establish righteousness in our land in times past, let us realize that it is now our turn! They are dead and can not fight our battles. We must stand in faith that we can turn this nation around. Certainly, if we attempt to redeem this nation in our own strength, we will fail miserably. We must [humble ourselves, and pray and seek His face, and turn from our wicked ways, then our Defender will hear from heaven, and will forgive our sin and heal our land. (1 Chronicles 7:14) We need to turn back to God whose laws and commandments laid the foundation for our nation, if we wish to restore the USA. Before God can bless America, America must bless God!

Sermon, 10/17/2010, Judicial Activism, Tyranny, Legislating from the Bench

The judiciary has done much harm in America. Through judicial activism, the US Supreme Court has removed the Bible, prayer, and the Ten Commandments from public schools and brought us abortion on demand.

In the following sermon, Pastor Bryan Longworth shows examples of judicial activism where the court has legislated from the bench and shows from scripture what our response as Christians should be.

Judicial Activism

 Opening Passage  – Psalm 148.

2 Chronicles 7:13‑14 – “When I shut up heaven and there is no rain, or command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence among My people, “if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.  (NKJV)

Matthew 5:13‑16 – “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”  (NKJV)

1 Timothy 3:15 – “. . . I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.”  (NKJV)

Matthew 28:18‑20 – “And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.  Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Amen.”  (NKJV)

Psalms 2:1‑12 – “Why do the nations rage, And the people plot a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying, ‘Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us.’  He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The Lord shall hold them in derision. Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, And distress them in His deep displeasure: ‘Yet I have set My King On My holy hill of Zion.  I will declare the decree: The LORD has said to Me, “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. Ask of Me, and I will give You The nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth for Your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.”’  Now therefore, be wise, O kings; Be instructed, you judges of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear, And rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, And you perish in the way, When His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.  (NKJV)

Sermon, Why should We Support Israel? Covenant Tabernacle, Pastor Chuck Longworth

Yesterday, 10/3/10, was designated as ‘The Day of Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem’. Over 175 nations joined together in prayer for Israel. The question might arise in the minds of some,” Why should we, as Americans and Christians, stand with Israel?” Psalm 122:6,7 is as follows: “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem, ‘May they prosper who love you. Peace be within your walls, Prosperity within your palaces.'” Blessings are promised, by God, to those who bless Israel and warnings to those who oppose or abandon her. Why? 1. They are God’s chosen people. 2. We, as Christians, owe much of our spiritual heritage to Israel. 3. The land was promised to Israel (the descendents of Abraham thru Isaac and Jacob). No such promise was given to Ishmael or Esau, etc. 4. There is no spiritual or rightful, legal provision for a Palestinian state. Palestine was never and is not now a nation. 5. Because, curiously, we’re right in the middle of Israel (JerUSAlem). Antisemitism frequently targets the U S as well as Israel, probably, among other things, because of America’s historical loyalty to Israel. Usually those countries (Iran is an example) that oppose Israel, also strongly oppose the U S. As a final comment, giving away territory will never bring peace to the Middle-East. Israel’s enemies don’t want another piece of the pie; they want the whole pie! Most of them do not even openly recognize Israel’s right to exist. Only Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, will ever be able to establish a lasting peace for Israel. Pray for the Peace of Israel and of Jerusalem! (More scriptural references can be given for those who are interested.) Shalom!

Vibrant Worship

Covenant Tabernacle World Outreach Center

Covenant Tabernacle

At Covenant Tabernacle, we believe in worshiping God “with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” (Mark 12:30 – NKJV) As a part of our worship, we blow the Shofar as blown in ancient Jewish worship.

Powerful, Bible based Preaching

We believe that the word of God is true (2 Samuel 7:28) and that “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 NKJV) We encourage all believers to develop a Biblical Worldview that shapes our view on not only our personal life but also our family, friends, loved ones, church, and civil government.

Discipleship

We believe in following Christ’s Great Commission to “‘go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Amen.” (Matthew 28:19-20 NKJV) As such, we believe in discipling individuals, families, communities, cities, states, and nations in obedience to God’s word.
